Tomb Raider Legend is a great game, mostly due to the approach taken by Crystal Dynamics. They have cleverly used the strengths of the former Lara combined with several tweaks to make this a game of the year contender.

The movement of Lara gives you more confidence that you are handling 'real' human. This is one of the tweaks that has led to the discarding grid style movement system, seen in previous Tomb Raiders. You can now be more assured that you will make that jump and cling onto the wall, rather than repeatedly attempting the same moves. Some may argue that this made Tomb Raider the game it was, but after a while it can become very repetitive and just doesn't fit in with modern day gaming. Good thing they changed it then!

Its all very well using Lara's strengths but what's new about 'Legend'? This is the factor which lets down Tomb Raider Legend. The developers have not been very courageous by attempting something unique. There is not the x-factor which makes Tomb Raider stand out from other action/adventure titles. Its a solid title with no major flaws, but lacks creativity.

Tomb Raider Legend is not the most challenging game of its type. First time around it took just under 9 hours to complete. Crystal Dynamics may have aimed for a shorter title, but it lacks more depth which could have made Legend even better. The length can be made longer by uncovering all the secrets and exploiting some more interesting elements, but the core gameplay is short. It leaves your appetite wet for more Tomb Raider.
